2 min read

New Delhi: Supreme Court has sentenced former cricketer and former MP Navjot Singh Sidhu to jail for one year in a road rage case.

Sidhu has been awarded imprisonment in 34 year old case reported in the year 1988.

Sidhu former Punjab Congress Committee President, was in his youth when he along with his friend had hacked a man to death in the road rage at Patiala.

The latest order is based on the petition filed by victim’s relatives in May 2018 appealing for reconsideration of the apex court’s decision, which was accepted by the court.

On May 15, 2018, Supreme Court had imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on Sidhu in the case. The Supreme Court had overturned the high court’s decision in which the high court had sentenced Sidhu and his friend to three years in jail in January 2007.

However the duo came out on bail after spending two nights behind bars.

On December 27, 1988, Sidhu had gone to the market of Sherawale Gate in Patiala along with his friend Rupinder Singh Sandhu. This place is close to his home. Sidhu was only a year old in international cricket then.

He had an argument with a 65-year-old man named Gurnam Singh, over parking the car in the market. It led to a scuffle and Sidhu stabbed Gurnam Singh on his knee. Gurnam Singh died at hospital later and was reported that Gurnam Singh died of a heart attack.

Sidhu and his friend Rupinder were booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder at Kotwali police station. The trial was filed in the sessions court. In 1999, the sessions court dismissed the case.

In 2002, the Punjab government appealed against Sidhu in the High Court.
