International Stuttering Awareness Day observed at AIISH

Mysuru: As part of ‘International Stuttering Awareness Day’ All India Speech and Hearing Institute on in order to create awareness among school teachers about stuttering, a seminar was organized at the institute here on Friday.

A total of 350 teachers from different places including HD Kote, Hunsur, KR Nagar, Mysuru Rural, Nanjangudu, Piriyapatna, T.Narasipur and Mysuru South regions participated in the program. Lectures were delivered on early identification of stuttering, facts and myths, guidelines to teachers in the management of stuttering, communication disorders, classroom adaptations and facilities for children with communication disabilities.

The day was presided over by the Director-in-charge Prof.Ajish K. Abraham, Dr. Swapna N,Head of Clinical Services, and Dr. Sangeetha Mahesh, Chairperson of the Fluency Unit was also present. The director-in-charge in his presidential address said that teachers also play important role in leading a better quality of life with communication disabilities throughout their lives.

The All India Speech-Hearing Institute in Mysore has been providing treatment for persons with communication disorders for the past 56 years. Many units have also been set up in the organization for specific problems. The fluency unit is one such unit to focus on the assessment and management of stuttering functioning since 2010 where about 500 people have avail clinical services every year.
