In Urs’ native Congress, BJP failed to impress voters

1 min read

Mysuru: Ahead of the by- election from Hunsur, the name of late D Devaraja Urs a former chief minister and champion of backward classes resonated every length and breadth of the segment.

To cash in on the popularity of Urs, a native of Kallahalli in Hunsur taluk, BJP candidate A H Vishwanath and Congress’ H P Manjunath did their best. Manjunath also emerged victorious when the results were out.

But, when compared to the share of votes polled by the parties in a booth set up at Kallahalli, it’s JD(S) that has outnumbered both the parties. Devarahalli Somashekar the JD(S) nominee secured highest of 363 votes, followed by 200 votes for Manjunath and 61 votes for Vishwanath.

Vishwanath had floated the concept of ‘ Separate Hunsur district in the name of Urs’. He also sought to derive some mileage by recalling his association with Urs, during whose tenure Vishwanath was the first time MLA in 1978.

Siddaramaiah called Vishwanath as a traitor for betraying Urs when there was a political tussle at that time. Urs had taken on Indira Gandhi and later walked out of the party.
