Mysuru: As Karnataka State Open University ( KSOU), Mysuru, turns 25, the university that gave new vision to distance education in the State has many reasons to cheer for. It was 25 years ago in May 1996, that this university in Mysuru, with a thrust on open and distance learning came into existence.
According to B Ganesh of K G Koppal “It has played a key role in helping lakhs of students reach their academic pursuit after discontinuing education for several reasons. From Vice-chancellors to teaching and non- teaching staff, many have their due share in the contributions.”
Barring a hurdle faced due to sudden cancellation of UGC recognition which saw a decline in number of annual admissions that had peaked to 40,000 to 50,000 once, it is now returning to lost glory.
It has been two years since the incumbent VC Dr S Vidyashankar took charge, the VC has been taking the system towards total digitalisation.
As the society is facing crucial times due to Covid-19, the university is also doing its mite showing social commitment to the core. KSOU building at Mandakalli is converted into a Covid Care Centre, and oxygen concentrators and masks were provided to help the needy. Thousands of masks and sanitisers were freely distributed to create safety awareness. Corona Warriors were also felicitated last year to encourage them.
Amidst this, two temporary workers of the University Shivashankar and Santosh died of Covid-19. The VC has promised job to the next of kin of the deceased two, showing his humanitarian gesture.
Likewise, hope that the the varsity which is in its silver jubilee year will ring a good news for the temporary workers.
