Bengaluru: The prevailing Covid-19 crises has caused sleep disorder among 40 per cent people, while 34 per cent suffer from stress and equal number of population suffer from mental related issues.
All these have come to light in the recent study of Indian Journal of Psychiatry.
The mental problems are in addition to deaths and jobs lost due to the pandemic that is taking a toll on the mental wellbeing of the people. These findings are even confirmed in other studies. To sum it up, at least 50 per cent of the people in the society suffer from one or the other mental issues. During such challenging situations, it is psychiatrists and counsellors who are coming in handy in keeping the morale of the affected.
According to Roopa Rao a noted psychologist and skills trainer of the city “Along with Covid-19 pandemic, many mental issues have cropped up in the society. In the last one-and-a-half years, over 2,400 people have been counselled and made aware of the importance of mental wellbeing.”
Most of them are youths, suffering from the fear of losing job, fatalities in family and affected by Covid-19. They were counselled and given fresh hope to lead a new lease of life.
According to Roopa Rao “stress management and keeping of mental health is a biggest challenge, especially in the case of youths in large numbers.”
Though the problems are compartmental in nature, all it needs is different methods of therapy, says Rao.
The increasing tension, fear among other mental conditions will affect the physical wellbeing. It also gives rise to insomnia, blood pressure.
However, there is a difference between the mental problems of youths, middle aged, children and other age group people. Though financial condition has nothing to do with mental problems, Covid-19 has for sure is the reason at every household. It needs a solution.
The uniqueness of Roopa Rao is finding solution to mental issues. Minimal use of social media and keeping better relation with the loved ones are among several remedies.
Roopa Rao who is a a certified advisor in child health, early education and skill development, feels “In Covid times we must give equal importance to both mental and physical health and help the community get rid of various ills.”
