Mysuru: In a first of its kind initiative in the State, steel wire rope barricade has been installed at Nagarahole National Park in the State.

The unique barricade has been installed at Veeranahosahalli range of the forest to check elephants from straying out of the wild to address man- animal conflict.

As the elephants have been straying out even after used rail tracks are installed as barricades, the new initiative has been incorporated to address the menace.

The forest officials apprised the district incharge minister S T Somashekar on inspection about its pros and cons.

As steel wire rope barricade involves high cost, the pilot project has been initiated in this part of the forest in the State. The cement pillars of 13 foot tall and 1.5 tonnes weight will be built using hi-tech technology. The pillars will be installed five feet deep into the ground and the steel wire rope barricade will be drawn horizontally connecting the pillars.

Somashekar said “It is a novel experiment expected to address elephants menace”.
