Bengaluru: The Karnataka Assembly witnessed some tense moments when Opposition BJP leaders staged a protest against deputation of IAS officers to receive leaders during the Opposition Parties’ meeting in Bengaluru, here on Wednesday.
During the protest, irked BJP legislators torn the drafts of the bill and threw at Deputy Speaker further fuelling the tension in the House. Marshalls were summoned into the House to bring the House in order. The session was postponed further.
The opposition parties have been complaining that the ruling Congress has misused the state bureaucratic machinery by deputing IAS officers to receive various political party leaders who had come to Bengaluru as part of Opposition Parties meeting on July 17 and July 18.
It was JDS MLA and former chief minister who took a dig at the Congress saying the State bureaucracy has never been misused to this extent in the last 40 years. “This is a total misuse of government machinery,” Kumaraswamy had said.
Responding to the allegations, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended the move saying many of the visitors were chief ministers and guests of the State. His Deputy, D K Shivakumar too said that “IAS officers were deputed as part of protocol as the leaders were guests of the State.”
Taking note of it, the BJP demanded an answer from the chief minister on Wednesday. But CM Siddaramaiah defended his move again. Irked BJP legislators raised slogans. During the chaos, the Assembly approved five bills. At this, Speaker U T Khader directed Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani to conduct the proceedings.
As Deputy Speaker chaired the proceedings, the BJP leaders further intensified their protest and some of them tore away draft bills and threw it at the deputy speaker. He immediately postponed the proceedings to late afternoon.
