Mysuru: Prostate enlargement and associated urinary issues are common concerns among older men in India, leading to symptoms such as difficulty urinating and a weak urine flow. If untreated, the condition—known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)—can result in complications like bladder stones.
Manipal Hospital Mysuru recently demonstrated cutting-edge medical advancements by successfully treating a 72-year-old man suffering from severe BPH and multiple bladder stones, even amidst additional health challenges such as diabetes and hypertension.
The patient, Raghuram (name changed), approached Manipal Hospital after experiencing persistent issues like blood in his urine, weak urine flow and incomplete bladder emptying.
Under the care of Dr Dinesh Kumar T P, Consultant in Urology and Andrology and Kidney Transplant Surgeon, it was discovered that his prostate was drastically enlarged (200 cc) and 21 bladder stones of approximately 1 cm each had formed. The complexity of the case was further compounded by the patient’s pre-existing health conditions.
To address the condition, a minimally invasive procedure combining Holmium Laser Lithotripsy and HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) was conducted. The surgery successfully removed all 21 bladder stones and the enlarged prostate tissue in a single session, without the need
for open surgery. Notably, this advanced technique was performed through the natural urinary passage under spinal anaesthesia, allowing the patient to be awake during the procedure.
The minimally invasive approach ensured reduced bleeding, quicker recovery and minimal pain, making it especially safe for high-risk patients like those with diabetes.
At a press conference held at Mysuru District Journalists Association (MDJA), Dr Dinesh Kumar highlighted the significance of using advanced laser technology in simplifying complex surgeries.
“This case demonstrates how minimally invasive procedures like HoLEP offer reduced complications, quick recovery and preservation of bladder control,” he stated.
The procedure allowed the patient to be
discharged within two days and resume normal activities soon after. He raised concerns about the growing issue of misinformation on social media, urging people to be cautious when relying on advice from influencers or self-proclaimed social media doctors.
He noted that health conditions and their causes differ greatly between individuals, making it essential to consult qualified medical professionals. He also emphasised the importance of seeking a second
opinion when necessary to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.
In addition, Dr Kumar mentioned the hospital’s initiative to make advanced medical care accessible to economically disadvantaged patients. Through the Manipal Foundation, Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholders can receive financial assistance for surgeries.
The foundation evaluates the criticality of
the patient’s condition and provides support ranging from 50,000 to 2.5 lakh, ensuring life-saving treatments are within reach for those in need.
This successful case reflects the advancements in urinary care offered by Manipal Hospital Mysuru, showcasing how modern technology and compassionate healthcare practices are setting a new
standard in addressing complex medical conditions.
