Highways resembled river, low-lying areas marooned as rain lashes Uttar Kannada district

Karwar: Following heavy rains in various parts of Uttar Kannada district, deputy commissioner Prabhuling Kavalikatti has ordered closure of all schools and colleges in the district on July 5.

Holiday has been declared to schools and colleges in Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar and Bhatkal taluks on Wednesday.

There has been no let up in the rain that is lashing the district since Monday. Bhatkal was one of the worst affected areas with flooded highways. The highways resembled rivers as water stood at least 3-4 feet above the road level. Besides, several low-lying residential areas too experienced flooding.

Even Karwar too suffered the worst on Wednesday evening. Several roads and residential areas were flooded and the ongoing road works only added to the woes of motorists.

Several houses and roads on the outskirts of Karwar were flooded. Places like Binaga, Chendiya Thodur, post Chendiya, Arga, Amdalli, Sunkeri, Sherwada, Kinnara, Bandishitta were the worst affected. Besides, Habbuwada road, Kodibag and in and around Karwar were flooded. Traffic came to a standstill in Karwar as the ongoing IRB project on Karwar-Ankola highway was completely marooned.

The Karnataka Natural Disaster Management Centre has informed about heavy rain in the district on July 5.
