Habitual offender back in jail after conning woman of Rs 4 lakh

Bengaluru: A 35-year-old habitual offender who had continued to con woman after returning from jail is back behind bars again.

Jagannath S Sajjanar, a resident of Ullal and hailing from Vijayapura is the accused.

This time he was arrested by Hennur police on the charges of cheating a 32-year-old woman of Kalyan Nagar. She had lost Rs 4.4 lakh to him.

In her complaint, the woman had alleged that he had introduced himself as Vijay while they met on a matrimony portal on March 28. They later met in person on April 2, where the accused won her confidence.

After 15 days, he asked for Rs five lakh claiming to have met with an accident, only to lose all the documents and cash. Believing in him, she gave him Rs 3.5 lakh in April after pledging her gold ornaments in a finance firm.

However, the accused went incommunicado later and also refused to marry and return money before switching off his phone.

Hapless, woman filed a complaint at Hennur station who eventually arrested Jagannath.

According to the investigation, he had similar criminal antecedents as he had cheated another woman of her 116 gram gold ornaments in Bagalur police limits.

Banashankari police had arrested him in a similar case on July last for cheating Rs 7 lakh to a 30-year-old accountant.

He came out of jail on bail eight months ago and continued with his illegal activities.

With the ill-gotten wealth, he had bought two cars and was living a lavish life.

In all Rs 1.5 lakh in cash, 116 grams of jewellery pledged in a finance firm, five mobile phones and 20 SIM cards were seized from him.

He has cheated atleast eight women and also blackmailed a few by keeping their intimate photos and videos. However, not many had filed a complaint, the officer added.

The accused targeted women in 30 years age group and divorcees, whom he zeroed in on matrimony sites.

A Bachelor of Arts (BA) graduate, Jagannath was posing as a civil engineer employed with a reputed firm.

Jagannath was giving fake names such as Vijay S, Ramesh and others. He was creating multiple profiles on matrimonial sites, with the ulterior motive of cheating women.
