Gujarat: In yet another surprise development in BJP ruled states in the country, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani announced his resignation on Saturday.

Previously, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa also announced his resignation in a similar fashion in July. Similar change of guard was witnessed in Uttarakhand too, where saffron party is at rule.

Rupani was the 16th CM of Gujarat since August 2016.

Rupani who addressed media conference to announce his resignation, clarified that he has stepped down as the chief minister abiding by the restrictions of the party. I will handle whatever role I am assigned to organise the party, he clarified.

This move comes ahead of the next Assembly elections due in several months. Rupani thanked both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president J P Nadda.
