Mysuru: AICC leader Mallikarjun Kharge launched the much-talked Gruha Lakshmi scheme as women gathered gave a rousing cheer at the Maharaja’s College ground here on Wednesday. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi directly transferred the amount to the bank accounts of beneficiaries through direct benefit transfer on the occasion. So far, 1.1 cr women heads in the State have enrolled for the scheme. Under the scheme, women heads of the families will get a monthly assistance of Rs 2,000.
Speaking on the occasion, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress government in Karnataka and the party has fulfilled its promise made during the election.
“We had made five promises and we have fulfilled four promises made during the election,” he said. He further said that among the five schemes, the four schemes are meant for the welfare of women folk in the State. “Be it Shakti scheme where women can travel for free in buses in the State, be it anna bhagya, Gruha jyothi or even the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, all are centered around women folk. For, they are the root of their family and if the root is stronger, even a storm can’t shake the family,” said Rahul Gandhi. “Women in Karnataka are the foundation of the state and we wanted to empower them through our schemes,” he added.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi further said that the idea to center their schemes around women stemmed from his interaction with womenfolk during his Bharat Jodo Yathra where he walked 600 km alone in Karnataka. “I met scores of women who poured their heart out about their sufferings due to inflation. We wanted to ensure empowerment of womenfolk as they are the root of their families. What better way to way to launch the scheme when the country is celebrating Raksha Bandhan,” he observed.
