Shivamogga: Remembering the self-less service of the Asha workers especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, the government is planning to strengthen their community by setting up a society for them, on the lines of Sthree Shakti Sangha, said Co-operation Minister ST Somashekhar.

He was speaking after providing Rs 3,000 monetary assistance to Asha workers here on Monday.

The government is thinking to open a society for them through Apex Bank or DCC Banks or from the government itself to help them provide loan up to Rs 50,000.

“I have brought this to the notice of the chief minister. He will review the proposal and may make an announcement on this in the coming days. There are 42,000 Asha workers in the state,” minister informed.

The self-help groups have a good track record of 100 per cent loan repayment. The government is hopeful that Asha workers too will maintain a similar track record, if they have a dedicated society for them, Minister said.

He thanked the chief minister for choosing him to head the co-operative sector.

On crumbling of societies due to some greedy influential, the minister warned of “lessons” to such influential persons, whose acts discourage the very purpose of the societies.

On closure of cash card banks, minister Somashekhar said that since there was no proper loan collection, it was decided to close down the bank. However, the chief minister has agreed for one more year to collect loan. This gives a temporary hope to the cash card banks, he said and urged the concerned to collect debts.

On the occasion, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister KS Eshwarappa thanked minister Somashekhar for felicitating the Asha workers.

He further said that the co-operative societies in Shivamogga alone have contributed Rs 1,64,57,000 to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, MP BY Raghavendra lauded the Asha workers and promised to draw the Parliament’s attention to their service.
