Mysuru: Every Dasara “Golden Throne” is pulled out of the safe and assembled at the Durbar Hall of Mysuru Palace.

Golden Throne is an integral part of Navaratri, that is celebrated by Wadiyars the erstwhile royals of Mysuru. Even after the abolition of princely rule, the royal family has kept the tradition alive, that attracts people from across the globe especially more during Dasara.

Scion of erstwhile royal family Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, the 27th titular head of the royals, ascends the Golden Throne for Khasgi Durbar (Private Durbar), the tradition in practice till the conclusion of Navaratri.

Like every year,  Gejjagalli villagers along with the workers of erstwhile royal family, assembled the Golden throne during the auspicious Tula Lagna between 9.15 am and 9.30 am on Friday. Bhadrasana, Golden Umbrella and steps, all made of gold and precious stones and idols of lions and Huma imaginary bird, along with that of Ashta Dikpalakas, animals like Horse, Shardula and Nagakannikas were assembled in a deft manner.

Pramoda Devi Wadiyar and Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar supervised the process.

To recall the history, Wadiyars are conducting Navaratri durbar since 1610 AD. While its history dates back to Hastinapura of Pandavas. The journey of this throne from Pandavas to Wadiyars is more an intriguing tale.

According to legend, it was with Pandavas, later it was occupied by many Indian rulers. Later, it was kept in a secret location before it came to the notice of  Vijaynagara empire’s Rajaguru Vidyaranaya, who showed the throne to Kampilaraya. Later Vijayanagar rulers  adorned the throne for 150 years.

In 1610, Golden throne was gifted by the then Srirangpatna ruler Srirangaraya to the ninth ruler of Wadiyar dynasty Raja Wadiyar.

During Tipu Sultan’s reign,  these throne was kept in a lumber room. It was only after the death of Tipu in 1799, the then Wadiyar king Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar brought the throne to Mysuru and started worshipping it during Dasara.

It was modified with rich gold and precious stones. In 1859 Mummadi wrote a book- Kusuma Manjari where the king has metioned every details related to the throne.

Golden umbrella is considered as an integral part of the throne. During Mummadi’s reign, 24 Shlokas related to Goddess Sri Chamundeshwari were etched, with a brief history of the throne, on this umbrella.

It is believed that the same shlokas (hymns) were rendered by Sathya Harishchandra, Sagara, Deelipa, Sri Rama.

When the old wooden palace was gutted in fire mishap in 1897, the Golden Throne was the only antique that remained safe without any damage, while most of the other articles were gutted in fire.

From October 7, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar will perform Simahasana Pooja and later conduct khasgi durbar at the durbar hall.
