Golden jubilee of Project Tiger: PM Modi to celebrate it in Bandipur Tiger Reserve

Mysuru: With Project Tiger completing fifty years, Bandipur Tiger Reserve, one of the chosen reserves for tiger conservation in Karnataka, is gearing up to make it more memorable.

Project Tiger was envisioned by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to save Tigers on April 1, 1973. Karan Singh, its first chairman had prepared a draft on efforts and initiatives of tiger conservation. The Project Tiger was first initiated in Jim Corbett National Park.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Bandipur Tiger Reserve on April 9 to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Project. A slew of events have been scheduled to mark the day. He will take part in the inauguration ceremony in Mysuru and will go on a safari from Melkamanahalli in Bandipur.

Authorities concerned are overseeing arrangements including a temporary helipad. Besides, temporary road has also been laid to receive PM Modi.

Sources said that PM Modi will visit Rampura elephant camp at Bandipur and interact with mahouts. He will also honour those who rescued an electrocuted elephant. He is expected to release a coin in memory of the golden jubilee of the Project Tiger.

He will later travel to Mudumalai Tiger Reserve’s Theppakadu elephant camp where he will meet ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ fame care-takers Bomman and Belli.
