Future Architects Unite: Building a Net-Zero Future to Combat Global Climate Change

Mysuru: The Solar Decathlon India (SDI) is an annual challenge for Indian undergraduate and postgraduate students to develop innovative, net-zero energy-water and climate resilient solutions for the building sector.

After two years of virtual events due to COVID-19, the 3rd edition of SDI took place at Infosys’ sustainable campus in Mysuru. Six teams emerged as division toppers and presented their solutions to a Grand Jury, with Team V⁰ from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology winning the prestigious Grand Prize.

The winners were announced in the presence of Anish Malpani, an innovator and social entrepreneur, who delivered the keynote address. The Finals showcased 36 projects to an audience of over 650 people. SDI also organized an internship fair, attracting leading organizations working on climate change and net-zero buildings.

Infosys generously provided the venue for the Finals, ensuring it was a carbon-neutral event. The SDI trophies awarded to the winners were carbon negative, highlighting the potential for creative and determined approaches to address Climate Change mitigation.

The Council of Architecture (CoA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with AEEE, the co-organizer of SDI, to expand the competition’s outreach and impact in addressing Climate Change. This partnership aims to encourage participation from architectural educational institutions and students.

Prasad Vaidya, Director, Solar Decathlon India, said “Some of these student teams have developed net-zero building designs that are on par with the work of the best professionals design teams in India. Within 9 months these students were able to scale a very steep learning curve. If students can do this so well, it is time that building owners and developers start demanding this quality of work on every building project they invest in.”

Solar Decathlon India, organised by IIHS and AEEE in collaboration with IUSSTF, ran for nine months. In the 2023-24 edition, 154 teams comprising 1780 students from 126 academic institutions, along with 200 faculty mentors, participated. The challenge attracted over 30 organizations offering opportunities for the participants.

The Solar Decathlon India is a challenge for Indian students to design affordable, net-zero-energy-water solutions for real projects and combat Climate Change in the buildings sector. Through online modules and mentorship, student teams develop industry-ready solutions, driving innovation in construction and real estate towards student-developed net-zero solutions.
