Free Kashmir placard case! Progressive thinkers write to Bar Association

1 min read

Mysuru: A group of progressive thinkers have written to Mysore Bar Association to reconsider their decision of not to take up the case of Nalini Balakumar ( Pic seen above) who held ‘Free Kashmir Placard’ during the protest organised at Manasagangotri the PG campus of University of Mysore, on January 08.

The girl has been charged under sedition without any reasons. She needs legal assistance from lawyers to disprove the charges. At the time of distress, the advocates have to act in compliance of the Constitution of India, the thinkers have urged in their two-page letter.

Jayalakshmipuram police who have registered a case ( FIR 02/ 2020) have already recorded the statements of youths involved in the protest. We respect their decision to take out a rally in support of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and such protests keep the democracy alive. Some of these students have to prepare for exams. However, in the name of ‘Free Kashmir Placard’ these students are living under fear. Amid this, the decision of Bar Association has worried the students further, the activists explained.

Hence, in the interest of young denizens, the Association should revoke the decision and cooperate within the ambit of law, the memorandum added.

The memorandum to Association has been signed by social activist Pa Mallesh, Prof B P Mahesh Chandra Guru, K S Shivaram, Prof Shabbeer Mustafa, C T Acharya, K Basavaraju among others.
