Former Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal dies at 95

Punjab: Parkash Singh Badal, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patriarch, who had served as the Chief Minister of Punjab for five non-consecutive terms passed away at the age of 95 on Tuesday.

Badal had been admitted to a hospital due to age related illness, where he died at fortis Hospital in Lamba.

He was born on December 8, 1927, in Punjab. Badal began his political career in the 1950s and became a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time in 1957. He was a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party, which primarily represents the Sikh community in Punjab.

Badal served as Chief Minister of Punjab for the first time from 1970 to 1971. He was re-elected as the Chief Minister in 1977 and served until 1980. Badal then served as the Chief Minister again from 1997 to 2002, followed by two more terms from 2007 to 2012 and 2012 to 2017.

During his tenure as the Chief Minister, Badal implemented several development initiatives in Punjab, including increasing agricultural productivity, improving infrastructure, and promoting tourism. He was also instrumental in establishing the Punjab State Agricultural Marketing Board, which helped farmers get better prices for their crops.

Badal’s political career spanned over six decades, and he played a significant role in the politics of Punjab. He received several awards and honors throughout his career, including the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in India, in 2015. Badal is survived by his wife Surinder Kaur Badal, son and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal,
