Former MLC A K Subbaiah no more

Bengaluru: Former MLC Ajjikuttira Kariappa Subbaiah popular as A K Subbaiah has passed away on August 27. He was 83.

A native of Hudikeri in Virajpet in Kodagu, he was a resident of Bengaluru.

An advocate by profession, he was associated with BJP in its earlier days in the State. He had served as the maiden president of BJP Karnataka unit.

He had exposed the corruption in then Congress government headed by Chief Minister R Gundurao, especially rolex watch scam of cabinet minister C M Ibrahim. During his tenure as BJP head in 1983 assembly elections, BJP had won more than 12 seats.

In the later years, Subbaiah fell out of BJP and formed his own Kannada Nadu Party. He was later nominated by Congress to Legislative Council from legislative assembly in 1988 and completed his full term till 1994.

In the recent years, he had come under severe criticism for supporting Tipu Sultan Jayanti announced by Congress government headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Subbaiah’s son A S Ponnanna has served as the additional advocate general of the State.
