Flood hit Bhajan artistes rediscover their secret to happiness

Mysuru: Five months ago in August 2019, flood wreaked havoc in North Karnataka region, claiming lives and properties. However, the spirit to rebuild life has kept the people going.

Now, the traditional artistes in hordes from north Karnataka have been enthralling the visitors at Suttur Fair with their rendition of bhajans.

It is also an inspiring story of people from North Karnataka people, with most of them involved in the traditional occupation of agriculture.

The fair is one stop for many culture, as it gives platform to local troupes. Artistes from the north are taking part in five day bhajan competition since 28 years, This year around 700 troupes have registered for competition with the highest of 155 from Bagalkot, 133 from Belagavi and 101 from Dharwad.

Competition is being held in various categories like- male troupe, female troupe, rural and urban troupes and instrumental troupes. About 439 male troupes have enrolled, with the rendition starting from 9.30 am to 6 PM. About 80 to 100 troupes perform each day, infusing a new lease of life again and again to the desi form of art.
 
Bhajan competition convener D S Sadashivamurthy told Mysoorunews.com “it’s a most beautiful event, as Suttur fair attracts thousands of people. Initially we were apprehensive that not many troupes can make it due to the conditions aftermath of natural disaster. However, we were surprised about the response”, he said. 
 
Veerabhadraiah a Bhajan artiste from Belagavi said “Bhajan is the secret to our happiness. We cannot spend days without singing our ode to almighty. Suttur fair is a mega platform for us, as it gives enormous opportunity to exhibit talent. This is my second outing”, he stated.
