Five police personnel suspended after man in custody dies in Honnavar

Honnavar: Five police personnel here have been suspended after a man in custody allegedly died by suicide in Honnavar on Sunday. The accused was being inquired for a theft case.
The deceased, Dileep Mondel, a native of Bihar had come to Honnavar along with his father in search of a job. They both reportedly were into polishing of gold ornaments.
Following complaints by the public that the duo were allegedly trying to cheat people in the name of polishing gold ornaments at Salehittalu in Honnavar town, the police had taken the duo into custody.
During the interrogation, the accused son allegedly sought drinking water. As he drank water, he allegedly consumed cyanide that he had brought along with him. Although he was rushed to the hospital, he died en route to the hospital, said Uttara Kannada SP N Vishnuvardhan.
Mangaluru IGP Chandragupta has visited the station and after receiving the report on the incident, he has issued an order suspending Honnavar circle inspector Manjunath, sub-inspector Manjeshwar Chandavar, police constables Santhosh, Ramesh Lambani and Mahaveer.
The case is expected to be handed over to the CID.
