Hassan: Revenue Minister R Ashok on Wednesday said ” Five lakh hectares of crops are destroyed in recent mayhem rain in the State. It includes 47,000 hectares in Hassan district.”
Speaking to media persons after inspecting the rain affected areas at Ragimarur village in Arkalgud taluk, Ashoka said ” Measures are being taken to distribute crop relief as it is expected to rain till November 30.”
In Hassan district, the crop loss is put at 47,022 hectares of land, besides 310 hectares of horticulture crops, worth Rs 100 crore and measures are being taken to disburse the relief. While a total of Rs 300 crore has been released towards crop relief, additional Rs 68 crore was released on Tuesday, said Ashoka.
The minister said he will also be inspecting crop loss at Kodagu, Hassan, Mandya and Tumakuru. Later, the information will be collected regarding the NDRF funds released for the purpose.
He also requested that it has been already written to the prime minister to increase the present relief of Rs 6800 per hectare under national disaster relief funds (NDRF). The relief is being paid as per the norms fixed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. It must be hiked by three fold, the minister said revealing the contents of the letter to PM.
With rains expected till November 30, the department officials have been also told to take necessary precautions. The farmers should also plan as per the weather forecast.
The minister said he has also collected information related to elephant menace at Sakleshpur, Alur and Kodagu. It will be discussed with forest officials regarding measures to check the menace and relief irrespective of crops and human lives.
