Mysuru: The first batch of nine Dasara elephants led by Captain Abhimanyu, the elephant which carries 750-kg golden howdah in Jumboo Savari has been released by Forest Department on Monday.
The list of nine elephants prepared for Gajapayana on September 1 was released at a meeting presided by Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Project Tiger) G V Rangarao at Aranya Bhavan in the city.
The elephants are: Abhimanyu, Bhima and Mahendra from Mathigodu Elephant Camp, Arjuna from Balle Elepahnt Camp, Dhananjaya and Gopi from Dubare Elephant Camp, Parthasarathi from Rampura Elephant Camp and female elephants Vijaya from Dubare Elephant Camp and Varalakshmi from Bhimanakatte Elephant Camp.
The elephants will be arriving in first batch in Mysuru to take part in forthcoming Dasara festival from October 15 to 24.
Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Project Elephant) Shashwathi Mishra, Conservator of Forest, Mysuru Circle, Malathipriya and DCF Saurabh Kumar attended the meeting.
The second batch of five elephants will be announced later, a press release from Conservator of Forest stated.
