Fight against single use plastic! On Children’s Day, MCC to involve school students

Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has planned a bigger drive against plastic menace in the city.

On November 14, Children’s Day, MCC will be involving 20,000 students from 500 schools in the city to collect plastic waste.

Mayor Pushpalatha Jagannath said on November 12 “The city Corporation in association with the department of public instructions has organised the event to check single use of plastic. The students will take out the drive in and around their respective campus’.

MCC Commissioner Gurudatta Hegde said “Students up to class 10 will be involved in the drive from 9 am to 10 am. The aim is to reduce the amount of plastic waste that is reaching the landfill at Sewage Farm in Vidyaranyapuram. About two lakh tonnes of all types of waste is dumped at the farm. The waste processing unit can handle only 200 tonnes of waste”.

Plans are afoot to Install new machines to augment the capacity. The plastic waste alone is generated up to 80 tonnes on a daily basis in Mysuru.

Hegde said “MCC has signed a MoU with Jagruth a startup which will recycle plastic waste to manufacture tiles with a mix of M- Sand. The tiles can be used for covering the pavements. Average rwo kg of plastic is needed to manufacture one tile and the durability is 10 years.

Health Officer Dr D G Nagaraj said “A Green Shop will be opened at Makkaji Chowk. It will be run by a NGO which will provide an alternative for plastic carry bags”.

Deputy Mayor Shafi Ahmed, Additional commissioner N M Shashikumar and Health Officer Dr M S Jayanth were present at the press meet.
