Qatar: The hot favourites Argentina lifted FIFA World Cup 2022 defeating France in the keenly fought final game, at the Lusail Iconic stadium in Qatar on Sunday.

In the penalty shootout, Argentina hit four goals against France’s two, lifting the trophy to end the drought of 36 years.

Argentina last won the world cup in 1986, with the legend 25-year-old Diego Maradona playing for the country as a captain.

Lionel Messi the star player of Argentina lived up to the expectations playing the skipper’s game, hitting three goals (including one in the penalty) for his side.

In the first half of the game, it was Argentina show with two goals against zero of France.

But the game took a tilt in the second half with French skipper Kylian Mbappe hitting two goals including a free kick, much to the joy of his countrymen who had gathered in large numbers in the stadium.

He hit two goals in quick succession, that gave them the much needed edge, with the pressure building up.

Even when Messi hit it again in the extra time, Mbappe levelled it to three.

Since the game began, Argentina dominated the scene leaving nothing to choice for France. But the Frenchmen made a comeback in the second half, changing the course of the game, stretching up to 120 minutes, including the extra time, giving a tough fight for Messi’s men, equalling the score card by 3-3.

It was in the penalty shoot out, Argentina proved their might again, netting four against two of France.

The fans of Argentina erupted in joy, with deafening sound all pervading the stadium, as a fitting farewell to Messi, who was playing his last game, as announced by the star player.

It was indeed a greatest world cup final ever in the recent years as Argentina won their third football world cup title.
