Mysuru: The official apathy has deprived farmers in K R Nagar taluk popularly known as ‘Paddy Bowl’ of cultivating paddy. Though there is abundant water in the canal, it is not reaching the paddy fields of farmers in the tail end.

This is the pathetic and perpetuating story of farmers of a few villages in Mundur, Doddakoppal and others, where over 500 acres of land are under paddy cultivation.

The farmers are dependent on the sub- canal of Hemavathi right bank canal (29) near Mundur, Saligrama in the taluk. Though water is released into the canal, the weeds and shrubs that have occupied the larger part of the sub- canal has turned into a biggest hurdle.

Every year during monsoon, the farmers especially of this part of the area have been bringing the recurring problem to the notice of irrigation department officials, but there is no solution yet.

It has become inevitable for the farmers to rely on borewell.

According to the farmers, if the canal is repaired with concrete lining, the problem can be addressed for permanent. But the officials should take a step in this regard.

Mundur Kumar president of standing committee, K R Nagar Taluk Panchayat warned of staging a protest in front of irrigation department office, if the grievance of farmers is not redressed within a week.

Mahendra Assistant Engineer, Hemavathi right bank upper canal, Dodda Kadur, Holenarsipur taluk, told Mysoorunews.com “Due to lack of funds we are unable to take up works on desilting and deweeding at the canal. The works will be taken up using available funds in the department”.
