Farmer leader decries amendment to land reforms Act

Mysuru: Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha State President Badagalapura Nagendra criticised the state government’s move to amend the Karnataka State Land Reforms Act 1961 claiming it will only benefit the corporates. 

Speaking to mediapersons here on Saturday, he said that by amending the Act, the very purpose of the Act – that was introduced by then chief minister D Devaraj Urs – is defeated.
As per the new amended law, non-agriculturists can buy farm land and ceiling on income from non-agricultural sources has been removed.  
It appears that Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa misinterpreted the high court order to amend the acS, observed Nagendra.
The amended Act will curtail farmer’s rights over the land they till and strengthen corporate companies’ hands. 
He further said that the association will distribute pamphlets against the government’s move on June 15. Besides, it will also hold protest from June 27 to 30 in front of all the Gram Panchayath offices.
