‘Farhana’ actress Aishwarya Rajesh faces threat; police security provided to her house

Chennai: Following the controversy surrounding newly released Tamil film ‘Farhana’, police force has been deployed outside the residence of actor Aishwarya Rajesh.

The movie directed by Nelson Venkatesan hit the screens on May 12, stoked a controversy since its trailer came out.

Aishwarya Subhash who plays the main role in the film, essays the character of a Muslim woman. The critics allege that the film portrays Muslim community a particular way, only to incite a few Muslim groups, including the Indian National League (INL), which termed it ‘anti-Islamic’.

Farhana’ is centred around a Muslim woman who joins a call centre to financially support her family. The woman later realises that she has been brought into a phone sex chat industry.

Amid this, she also develops a bond with one of the callers and agrees to meet him in person.

Islamic organisations have called for a ban on the film, saying that it is insulting to their religion.

Indian National League (INL) leader Tada J Abdul Rahim filed a complaint against the movie with the Chennai Police Commissioner.

A show of the film at a theatre in Thiruvarur was cancelled on May 12 after protests by the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazahagam (TMMK).

Actress Aishwarya Rajesh and the producers Dream Warrior Pictures have clarified that they did not intend to hurt any religion.

The protest against the film comes after theatre owners in Tamil Nadu decided to cancel shows of ‘The Kerala Story’ after protests outside theatres by Islamist groups.
