Elephant dies of illness at Nagarahole forest camp; autopsy reveals arthritis, multi-organ failure

Mysuru: A 50-year-old elephant died due to illness at Mathigodu elephant camp in Anechowkur range, Nagarahole Tiger Reserve on Saturday.
The elephant named Subramani, which was being trained at the camp was shifted out of the crawl on July 20. On August 11 at around 10 am, the tusker was found ill.
Dr Chittiyappa from Dubare camp, Dr Madan Gopal from Leela Pet Hospital, Veterinarian Dr H Ramesh, along with DCF Harshakumar Chikkanaragund and ACF Dayanand from Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, all attempted to save the elephant by constantly monitoring its health condition.
Attempts were also made to lift the pachyderm with the help of a crane, but it went in vain. The elephant succumbed at around 3.15 pm.
During autopsy, it was found that the elephant was suffering from arthritis, multi-organ failure and septicaemia (infection).
The carcass of the elephant was later buried in the forest.
