Bengaluru: The Department of School Education and Literacy has directed the undergraduate colleges’ principals and authorities not to consider Muslim girl students’ pleas to wear hijab to write Second PU Exams that will commence from March 9.

Several colleges in Udupi, Chikkaballapur, Chamarajanagar and Bengaluru have received requests from Muslim girl students to allow them to write Second PU exams wearing hijab, it is reported.

The hijab row is in the Supreme Court now and until the orders, the government is expected to go ahead with its decision of not allowing hijabs in exams.

It may be recalled here that after the row hit national headlines, the Karnataka High Court, last year, had upheld the State government’s ban on hijab in class where uniform is prescribed. It ruled that “wearing hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam and under Article 25 of the Constitution it is subject to reasonable restrictions.”
