District libraries turn cool summer camps for rural kids

2 min read

Mysuru: This year summer camp has been different for children from rural areas who otherwise could not afford to come to the city to attend month-long summer camp at Rangayana and other places. They attended a unique summer camp organised by the district libraries following the directions of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department. The eight-day summer camp held from May 19 to May 27 conducted by the 256 libraries helped in tapping the hidden talent in children.

The children between the age group of 8 years and 13 years attended the camp from 10 am to 1.30 pm. Through innovative activities and programmes, students were taught on arithmetic, science experiments, leadership and communication skills through experts. Not just that, they also learnt first hand on how to conserve the environment that surrounds them. Interestingly, the experts at the summer camp were librarians, creative teachers, retired anganwadi workers, volunteers from schools and colleges who kept the children educated and entertained through their out-of-the-box activities.

The students were taught on local culture, how to be sensitive towards a social cause among others that would hone their leadership skills in future.

Some of the interesting activities conducted here were making children read newspapers everyday, drawing, story telling, treasure hunt, letter writing, science experiments, how to use measure, tangram, chess and carrom.

What more! To help children know how certain systems work, they were taken on a visit to post office, dairy units, bank, hospital, gram panchayat. They were taken to agriculture fields. Besides, there was a training on You Tube too. A workshop on pottery and art and craft was also held.

At the end of the camp, the children were made to share their experiences of the camp as that would enhance their communication skills.
