Mysuru: In the backdrop of gang rape of a girl student on Lalithadripura road recently, Kannada activist Arvind Sharma has demanded for formation of district level women’s awareness committee.
Observing that it is not enough if the Women’s Commission opens its eyes only after the incidents are reported, Sharma said “While the Karnataka State Women’s Commission visited the spot in gang rape case, there are no instances of Commission raising its voice in relation to similar cases reported in banks, private offices and garment factories. No measures are taken to check such cases.”
The working women often fall prey to their ogling bosses. Even at the place of constricting working atmosphere, she remains a mute victim for the responsibilities she has to shoulder. The Women’s Commission promises to act only in the case the victim lodges a complaint. But the victims can’t resort to complain, due to the fear of losing job.
Hence to provide a perfect platform for women to air their woes, the district administration should take measures to open district level awareness committee.
The district administration should also appoint a nodal officer and nominate members who have genuine concerns for the welfare of women.
Besides, Legal Awareness programmes should be conducted against harassment of women, Sharma has demanded.
