2 min read

Hubballi: Following the denial of ticket by the party, senior leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Saturday announced his decision to quit the party.

Shettar will be taking a decision on his next move soon, as he is expected to contest May 10 election as a BJP rebel candidate.

Shettar who made efforts till the last minute to get ticket from Hubballi- Dharwad Central Constituency, which he has represented for six terms, tried to convince the party higher ups.

Even Union Minister and Karnataka Election Incharge Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai held a meeting with Shettar at the latter’s Vinobha Nagar residence for 40 minutes till late night hours of Saturday.

As the meeting failed, Shettar announced his decision to quit the party, severing his several decade-long association with saffron party.

He will submit his resignation as MLA to Assembly Speaker Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri at Sirsi in Uttara Kannada. Shettar has also decided to submit his resignation to the primary membership of the party.

Even before the first list of 189 candidates was announced, Shettar had refused to accept the party’s diktat to pave way for others.

Shettar had gone to New Delhi to impress upon the party top brass.

Amid this, Shettar’s supporters had been staging protest in front of their leader’s house since morning, condemning the party’s stand of denying the ticket.

BJP has announced 212 candidates in two lists, but has not announced the candidate yet for Hubballi- Dharwad Central seat represented by Shettar.
