Dasara veteran elephant Balarama died of TB: Forest Department

Mysuru: Dasara veteran elephant Balarama who died on Sunday, succumbed to Tuberculosis (TB), according to a detailed press note released by Forest Department.

According to Endoscopy report, Balarama was suffering from tuberculosis and the forest Veterinarians were treating the elephant for the disease. Since May 1, Balarama had stopped taking food irrespective of hard and liquid diet and breathed its last at 5.15 pm.

The autopsy will be conducted on Monday and cremation will be performed near Karekatte camp (Bheemanakatte Elephant Camp) in Hunsur Wildlife Range.

The priest and Shrutikerrthi Devi Urs of erstwhile Mysuru royal family, DCF and Director of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve Forest Harshakumar Chikkanaragund, Forest Officials and personnel and Shrutikerrthi Devi Urs of erstwhile Mysuru royal family will be present during the cremation.

The illness of Balarama came to notice on April 19, when the kavadi informed the officials about the elephant vomiting the food. Soon the treatment was started and a sharp piece of a tree was found in the elephant. It was fed with liquid diet and there was no instance of vomiting. But on April 27, the elephant started vomiting the food.

A team of Surgeons Dr Chittiyappa, Dr Ramesh, Dr Madan, Dr Yashas and Dr Abdulla conducted endoscopy and sent the samples for laboratory test.

The 67-year-old Balarama had carried 750-kg Golden Howdah for 14 years during Jamboo Savari of Nada Habba Mysuru Dasara and the Mahouts were Gopala, Doddanna and Thimma.
