Dasara veteran Balarama laid to rest with state honours

Mysuru: Balarama, veteran Dasara jumbo, who died on May 7 was laid to rest with State honours at Karekatte Forest in Hunsur Wildlife Division on May 8. As a mark of respect to the gentle giant, who carried the Golden Howdah for a record 14 years, police fired three rounds in the air followed by rituals performed by Palace priests.

Mysuru Circle Conservator of Forests Malathi Priya, Deputy Conservator of Forests and Nagarahole Tiger Reserve Forest Director Harshakumar Chikkanaragund, Deputy Conservator of Forests Seema P A, Sourabh Kumar, Sharanabasappa and all the forest personnel from Nagarahole forest were present to pay their last respects.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the departed soul. In a tweet he said that “For many years, Gajaraja Balarama was a key part of the iconic Dasara celebrations in Mysuru. People fondly recall him carrying the murthy of Maa Chamundeshwari. His passing away is saddening. Om Shanti.”

Shrutikeertidevi Urs of erstwhile Royal family, Balarama’s mahout Thimma and his family, Kavadi Manjunath and veterinarians who treated Balarama – Dr Ramesh, Dr Nagaraju and Dr Mujeeb too were present.
