Forest veterinarian Dr Nagaraj told media persons that “As it’s simple Dasara, we have selected five elephants- Abhimanyu, Vikrama, Gopi, Vijaya and Cauvery. Unlike previous years, there is not much tension this time because the Jamboo Savari procession is restricted to Palace precincts”.
All the elephants will be taken for a training, along with sandbag and wooden howdah in the later days, covering a distance of around 500 metres, the officer said.
We have taken all the precautionary measures regarding Covid pandemic. All the mahouts and kavadis are using masks and sanitisers, he said.
If necessary we will collect swabs of elephants and send them for test at a laboratory in Bengaluru, said Dr Nagaraj.
DCF (Wildlife) Alexander said “all the five elephants have completed primary test. Abhimanyu who is selected to carry 750-kg Golden howdah this year, is a part of Dasara for the last 21 years. So, he is found capable to carry the howdah”.
Abhimanyu led team of elephants will be welcomed at Mysore palace at around 12.18 pm on Friday. All the elephants will be taken on lorries to palace.
Cooperation and district minister S T Somashekar, representatives of district administration and Mysore Palace Board will welcome elephants with fruits and flower petals at Jayamarthanda gate of the palace.
