Kodagu: For the second time, Dasara elephant Dhananjaya clashed with fellow elephant Kanjan at the Dubare Elephant Camp, causing alarm among tourists.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 20, during visiting hours, shocking both visitors and the mahouts, who struggled to control the situation.
Dhananjaya, a 44-year-old elephant captured in 2013 from the Yesalur Range in Hassan, has shown aggressive behavior in the past.
The first altercation between Dhananjaya and the 25-year-old Kanjan took place on September 21 during preparations for the Dasara festivities at the Mysore Palace Elephant Camp.
In that incident, Dhananjaya chased Kanjan up to the Jayamarthanda Gate of Palace at night, before mahouts and kavadis managed to bring both elephants under control.
In this latest clash, Dhananjaya, in a fit of rage, struck Kanjan, who was chained at the time and unable to escape the assault.
Tourists recorded the confrontation, which quickly spread on social media, sparking debate online about the management of these majestic animals.
Despite the best efforts of the mahouts, Dhananjaya’s aggressive behavior persisted, leaving Kanjan visibly distressed and in pain. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of both the elephants and the visitors at the camp.
