Mysuru: As the City of Palaces is gearing up for the upcoming ten-day extravaganza, Mysore Dasara 2023, preparations are being made to host traditional rituals including the assembling of the golden throne. This year, the diamond-studded golden throne will be assembled on October 9 (Monday) at an auspicious hour between 10.05 am and 10.35 am in Shubha Lagna at Durbar Hall of Mysore Palace. Prior to that various sacred rituals including Navagraha homa will be performed at 7 am, it is learnt.

The assembling of historical golden throne, one of the main tourist attractions marks the preparations of private durbar of the royal family of Wadiars. The Private durbar or the Khasagi durbar, an erstwhile practice, is still in practice, during the Dasara celebrations.

Legend has it that the golden throne was handed over from Pandavas and later it changed hands from kings to kings including Vijayanagara kings and then later to Wadiyars.

The dismantled throne which would be kept in a safety room – after the Dasara celebrations – would be assembled every year prior to Navarathri celebrations. The traditional workers will be summoned from Gejjagalli along with the staff of erstwhile royal family who will assemble the throne.

It was Raja Wadiyar the ninth ruler of Yadu Dynasty, to which Wadiyars belong to, was the first king to ascend the Golden Throne in 1610, during maiden Dasara at Srirangapatna. Since then, Wadiyars have preserved the throne and subsequently moved to Mysuru.

The throne made of fig wood and is embellished with precious stones, diamonds and ivory. In fact, in 1816, the silver coating was changed into gold and it weighs 250 kg.
