Dasara 2023: Gajapayana begins; Abhimanyu leads the pack

Mysuru: As a prelude to the World famous Dasara, ‘Gajapayana’, a ritual to mark the march of elephants from woods to the City to take part in the dasara, got underway at Veeranahosahalli in Hunsur taluk on Friday. The caparisoned jumbos decked up with flowers stood in line at a decorated arch to receive the traditional puja at Tula Lagna.
District In-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa showered floral petals on the pachyderms to mark the beginning of Gajapayana. Mysuru Palace priest Prahlad Rao and the team conducted the rituals of Gajapayana.
The elephants – Arjuna, Bheema, Gopi, Dhananjaya, Varalakshmi, Vijaya, Mahendra and Kanjan – will be led by Abhimanyu. They will now arrive at Mysuru Aranya Bhavana and get ready to take part in 413rd Dasara.
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre released a booklet on Dasara elephants. Mayor Shivakumar, Deputy Mayor Roopa, MLA GD Harish Gowda, Deputy Commissioner Dr K V Rajendra, SP Seema Latkar, City Police commissioner Ramesh Banoth, forest officials Malathipriya and Sourabh Kumar were present.
