Dalit leader, former minister Manjunath no more

Bengaluru: Former minister D Manjunath passed away after prolonged illness on February 03. He was 93.

According to family sources, Manjunath who was unwell for sometime had been admitted at Apollo Hospital, where he breathed his last.

A prominent dalit leader who began his political career in Janata Parivar was with Janata Dal and later Janata Dal ( Secular).

A native of Jajur in Challakere taluk in Chitradurga, he had represented Hiriyur constituency in Legislative Assembly. Another prominent dalit leader K H Ranganath (who passed away in 2011) of Congress was his traditional rival in the elections.

When H D Kumaraswamy became the chief minister, with the first ever JD(S) and BJP coalition government coming into existence in 2006, Manjunath was the minister for higher education.

He also had the prior experience of handling portfolios of primary and secondary education, labour, forest and also chairman of Legislative Council.

In the year 2012, Manjunath quit JD(S) and joined BJP. However he later remained inactive due to his ill health.

Manjunath leaves behind his wife, two sons, grandchildren and a host of relatives.
