Mysuru: Two monolithic idols of Nandi (Bull), the major parts of which that has still remained in the earth, at Arasanakere village in Jayapura hobli in the district has been beckoning one and all.

The name of the village that loosely translates into ‘King’s Lake’ in English, was also visited by the then Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar during the fag end of his rule.

Two idols of Nandi facing each other at Arasanakere in Jayapura hobli in Mysuru district.

The Maharaja who had heard about a temple of Basaveshwara that had remained under water, came here only to see the deluge. He later dispatched men and materials including a motor to pump the water. But, they could not accomplish the task even after one week of relentless work. Hapless, maharaja had to be content by performing puja to the water, with the belief that the prayers will reach Nandi.

The villagers who refused to give up launched the work on removing water and eventually succeeded but only the facial part of Nandi, two idols facing each other could be seen. Since then, they have been worshipping the idols.

Now, they have finally made efforts to excavate the remains on their own. All these years, only the facial part of the idols were visible forcing the devout villagers to dig deep around the idols. Two JCBs are also summoned for the purpose.

They have also found various other idols of the Gods and Goddesses, but the curiousity around Nandi idols still remain.

The villagers want the department of ancient history, archaeology and museums to excavate more to unravel the history.

Not to forget, the Wadiyars who were equally curious, the villagers want the present scion of erstwhile royal family of Mysuru Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar to visit the village.
