Covid-19 pandemic teaches MCC, Mysureans lesson on waste segregation

2 min read

Mysuru: What the Mysuru City Corporation could not achieve all these years, the Covid-19 pandemic managed it in just 28 days! The Corona virus has caused a pandemic and at the same time, it has taught the importance of waste segregation at home.

Although, Mysuru is one of the cleanest cities in the country, it used score low on waste segregation in clean city rankings. With the Covid-19 pandemic everywhere, people and even the civic body have learnt a lesson in waste management.

In Mysuru, 12 Containment zones had been identified after Covid19 outbreak. As per the district administration’s instructions, the Mysuru City Corporation set plans to manage the containment zones. Measures like, single entry-exit restriction for the public, restricted movement for even daily needs helped in great deal.

MCC asked the residents to segregate waste at root level. They were asked to segregate dry waste, wet waste and medical waste. Everyday, dedicated Pourakarmikas with PPE kits collected waste separately and disposed it in a scientific manner. In containment zones, they  asked people to compost wet waste. To help the residents, it provided cocopit, cow dung slurry and anaerobic digester slurry. This is yielding results.

MCC Health Officer Dr Nagaraj DG told Mysoorunews.com that “It is showing results. We mapped all the houses in containment zones and instructed to give segregated waste. The response is good as waste is segregated at the source. Residents voluntarily make Whatsapp groups and share thoughts about initiatives. This is encouraging.”

Now, the challenge lies in its continuation. Will the MCC be able to manage in future? Only time will tell.
