Hassan: Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said he will discuss with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa regarding mandatory testing of people who are returning from Maharashtra and undergoing 14 days institutional quarantine, before they return to their home.

Speaking to reporters after reviewing the Covid 19 situation in the district on Tuesday, he said the suggestion of mandatory testing for travellers returning from Maharashtra has come from not only experts but also from the elected representatives after the state witnessed a sudden spike in the Corona cases after a large number of people, mostly migrant workers, returned from Maharashtra – which has become a hotbed of covid19. It would also be discussed with Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy to explore legal remedy to make testing mandatory for persons undergoing institutional quarantine before discharging them. Presently, people are being allowed to go home after 14 days of mandatory institutional quarantine.

Sudhakar said “three months ago, the state had just two Covid-19 testing laboratories with a capacity to test 200 to 300 samples per day. However, as on May 31, government has set up 64 laboratories and examined 3,04,816 people of which 2,97,052 persons have tested negative. Only 3408 of them are positive cases which means that only one in every 100 tests is positive. This positivity rate of 1% is one of the lowest in the entire country. Even the mortality rate in Karnataka is one of the lowest in country with 1.5 per cent to 2 per cent which is less than national average. As on today, only two patients are on ventilator. The state is indebted to Government of India which has not only supplied medicines, PPE kits and other equipment but has also released sufficient funds to take care of poor quarantined migrant workers”, he said.

The minister said people need not worry as the number of positive cases is likely to increase in a big proportion due to relaxation in lockdown rules and running of trains from different states. The government of Karnataka has made necessary arrangements to treat 1.5 lakh cases at any point of time in the coming days. The cases are bound to increase as the testing has been increased since last few days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appreciated Karnataka for effectively managing the Covid 19 endemic. A memorandum of understanding had been signed with premier national institutions and universities to study the resistance power of Indians to the Coronavirus as more than 80% of the positive cases are asymptomatic. The Corona virus is not a new virus but its intensity has increased after mutation and has posed a serious health issue to as many as 212 nations in the world, the Minister said.

We need to change our lifestyle and start living with the virus by adopting safety measures till a vaccination is found out”. minister said.

Sudhakhar directed Deputy Commissioner of Hassan to hold a meeting with IMA, local unit and also with KMC office-bearers to impress upon them to direct doctors to re-open all clinics, dispensaries and nursing homes to treat non-covid patients. In fact, the vaccination to small babies against various diseases had not been done in the last three months due to closure of private clinics.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister JC Madhuswamy, Kumaraswamy, Shivalinge Gowda, MLA Mr Pritham Gowda, Balakrishnan, all MLAs and Gopal MLC were among those who participated in the review meeting.

Visit to Medical College

After the meeting, the minister visited Hassan Medical College and Research Centre and reviewed its functioning.
He asked the director to immediately start the process of filling vacant teaching and non-teaching posts. He also instructed the the institute to have a record of outsourced workers.

The minister directed the staff to strictly adhere to guidelines issued by the Government of India on Covid 19 cases treatment and contacts of affected people. He also interacted with degree and PG students, and also with faculty of various departments.
