Covid-19: After tiger tests positive in NY, Mysuru Zoo initiates preventive measures

Mysuru: As the world woke up to the shocking news of a captive tiger testing positive for Corona Virus in New York, Sri Chamrajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysuru is taking all precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its inmates.

A four-year-old female tiger named Nadia at Bronx Zoo, New York, has been tested positive for Corona Virus. It is suspected that the tigress could have been infected by a zoo keeper. It is the first known case of an animal infected with the Corona Virus in the world.

As the news spread, the Zoo authorities have begun to sanitise the premises with disinfectants. Disinfectant mats have been kept at all the animal enclosures and employees are using masks and gloves.

Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens executive director Ajith Kulkarni told Mysoorunews.com that “We have taken all the preventive measures to ensure safety of the animals. Touching of animals was not allowed here even before Covid-19. This shall continue. Our employees have taken all the necessary measures like sanitizing the enclosures. Besides, disinfectants are being sprayed every week in the Zoo.”
