Congress’ Rs 7,500 crore “Supercharged” Smart Meter Scam rocks Karnataka: Nikhil Kumaraswamy

2 min read

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Congress government has found itself at the center of a storm over an alleged Rs 7,500 crore scam in the procurement of smart electricity meters. Opposition parties have accused the ruling party of blatant corruption, claiming that meters worth Rs 1,500 each are being purchased for a staggering Rs 4,998—more than triple the price!

JD(S) Youth wing President Nikhil Kumaraswamy took to social media, launching a scathing attack on the Congress government.

He alleged that 39 lakh smart meters are being procured at massively inflated prices, resulting in an enormous financial burden on the state exchequer.

“Rs 1,500 worth smart meters are being procured at Rs 4,998, because Congress believes in supercharged corruption,” Nikhil Kumaraswamy tweeted, accusing the government of siphoning off public money through an inflated contract.

Adding fuel to the fire, allegations suggest that the contract for procuring these smart meters wasn’t even awarded to a reputed manufacturer but instead to a company specializing in… electric poles! This shocking revelation has raised serious concerns about the tendering process and the credibility of the entire deal.

“39 lakh meters, Rs 7,500 crore scam, and the contract goes to… an electric pole manufacturer!” Nikhil Kumaraswamy exclaimed, calling the deal a blatant example of cronyism and financial mismanagement.

With allegations flying thick and fast, Nikhil Kumaraswamy demanded an independent probe into the contract. He argued that awarding such a crucial project to an unqualified supplier reeks of favoritism and financial malpractice.

Nikhil also questioned how a simple smart meter, available in the market for Rs 1,500, is being purchased at a massively inflated price of Rs 4,998. “Where is the extra money going? Who is profiting from this daylight robbery?” he asked.

This scandal has only added to the growing list of corruption allegations against the Karnataka Congress government. As public outrage grows, the people of Karnataka are left with one burning question: Will there be accountability, or will this scam be buried like so many before it?
