Coast guard team rescues research vessel with 8 scientists off Karwar coast

1 min read

Karwar: A research vessel with eight scientists among 36 crew members that was stranded midsea off Karwar Coast following an engine failure was rescued by the Indian Coast Guard on Thursday. It was approximately 20 nautical miles away from the land when the Indian Coast Guard received distress signals.

The research vessel – RV Sindhu Sadhana of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) – had on board eight scientists among 36 crew members.

As the coast guard received distress signals, they immediately swung into action pressing a high-priority rescue operation. A highly skilled team was involved in the rescue operation.

Due to the challenging weather and the vessel’s distance from coastline, the coast guard team had to tow the vessel to Goa as its possible grounding in sensitive Karwar coastline could have resulted in major oil spill thus polluting marine environment.
