Mysuru: Through education, dasoha and spiritual samskara, the Suttur Mutt has been striving to bring underprivileged and poor into the mainstream of the society. This has been the path laid down by visionary seer Jagadguru Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Mahaswamy, observed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Addressing a gathering at the 108th birth anniversary of Jagadguru Dr Sri Shivratri Rajendra Mahaswamy at Suttur Mutt here on Tuesday, CM Siddaramaiah appreciated the mutt’s endeavour in erasing inequality prevailing in the society through education and dasoha.

He further said that it was a kind of penance for Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Mahaswamy who strived to make citizens better human beings with education and dasoha. Even after 75 years of Independence, only 78 out of 100 people are literate in the society. The rest still haven’t got it. If scientific and rational education is not available to all, the society will continue to suffer from inertia, Siddaramaiah observed.

Hailing 12th Century reformer Basavanna who advocated equality through ‘Iva Nammava’ message, Chief Minister said that his government firmly believes in Basavanna’s ‘Iva Nammava’ mantra. “We have introduced guarantee programmes to increase the purchasing power among all irrespective of caste, religion and class and make them economically empowered,” he added.

He was of the opinion that Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswami’s innumerable work reflect Basavanna, Ambedkar, Gandhi’s aspirations for the social justice. “And this has been our government’s inspiration,” he said.

Social Welfare Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa presided. Suttur seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra swami, Adichunchanagiri Mutt seer Sri Nirmalanandanatha swami, Sri Siddalinga swami of Siddaganga Kshetra, Sri Vishwaprasanna Theertha Sripada of Udupi Pejawara Mutt were also present.
