CM Bommai unveils giant statue of Shivaji near Belagavi; MLA Lakshmi Hebbalkar skips event

1 min read

Belagavi: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai unveiled a 60-ft statue of Shivaji at Rajhunsgad fort near Ellur in Belagavi on Thursday.

The statue had been a prestige issue between the Congress and BJP, as Belagavi rural MLA Lakshmi Hebbalkar had made all the groundwork to have the statue unveiled on March 4 and 5. She had been taking credit for the restoration of Rajhunsgad fort and installation of Shivaji statue. Accordingly, she had sent out invites where only the Congress leaders were invited for the programme on March 4 and 5. But this did not go well with BJP leaders and MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi had complained that this was a government’s programme and not of the Congress party alone. He had raised opposition for violating the protocol in the invitation, too. But it is reported that Lakshmi Hebbalkar was allegedly adamant over making this a ‘Congress event’, hence, the BJP leaders decided to unveil the statue, earlier.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai unveiled the giant statue where district in-charge minister Govind Karjol, MP Mangala Angadi, MLAs Ramesh Jarkiholi, Anil Benake, Abhay Patil and others were present.
