Chikkamagaluru: Co-operation Minister S T Somashekhar who visited the district APMC yard here on Tuesday has promised to provide a cold storage to help the growers to keep their produce fresh.

During his inspection of the yard, he spoke to the farmers and listened to their grievances. After growers complained that they do not have any facility to enhance the shelf life of their produce, the minister promised to provide cold storage for the district.
This was seconded by Minister C T Ravi who also urged for the cold storage.
On APMC Act, the minister was of the opinion that the Act is a boon to the farmers. The APMC Board has been entrusted with the powers to provide licence or reject it. Hence, before giving permit to any private entities, the Board will ensure farmers’ interests first, said the minister.
Minister C T Ravi also said that the farmers can now sell their produce in any private societies that they wish to. They can also form a separate society and sell their produce. This is advantageous to the farmers, MLA Ravi added.
On misappropriation of crores of rupees at DCC Banks and co-operative societies, the minister said that the government has recalled the services of auditors who were deployed at other places. Besides, a separate team will be formed to probe irregularities in all the DCC Banks and VSSN Societies, the minister informed.
The minister held a review meeting of APMC administrative Board.
