2 min read

Mysuru: If you are regularly visiting the vegetable market on M G Road in the city, you surely would have seen him.

Yet, here is an intriguing story behind this churmuri vendor on wheels or mobile chaat vendor. Srinivas a native of Kadakola in Nanjangud taluk is a resident of Hootagalli on the outskirts of Mysuru.

A “devara guddappa’ ( a tradition still in practice in rural households where a male family member will be on service of house deity) worships at Lord Venkataramana Swamy temple in his native on occasions.

While he ekes out his living as a churmuri vendor ( a popular chaat made using a mix of puffed rice, carrot slice, roasted groundnut and spicy items). Unlike others, he carries a box on the back of his moped (A TVS heavy duty) with an umbrella as shade. The box contains utensils and ingredients used to prepare the common man’s snack. An audio player with a box type speaker is also attached to it. Songs are played regularly, even when Srinivas is riding the vehicle, an indication to his regular customers that, “Churmuri maker has arrived at their doorstep”.

Srinivas told Mysoorunews.com ” I travel about 50 km a day with most of the customers being vegetable vendors and garment factory workers in Hootagalli”.

It has been close to 10 years since Srinivas is selling churmuri and has even married off his two daughters, suffice to understand that “Srinivas is content with his role as a churmuri vendor”.
